Zechariah’s vision has four parts: defending Joshua from Satan’s accusations, removing Joshua’s filthy robes (representing Israel’s sin) and dressing him in fine garments, a charge given to Joshua to be obedient, and a hopeful promise of ‘the Branch,’ sins forgiven, and prosperity in the days to come. This passage provides an example of a recurring theme throughout scripture: God’s abundant grace is always offering us a new beginning. God deals with Joshua/Israel gently, like a loving parent providing new clothes for their child; Israel is given a fresh start which reveals their deeply loved identity as children of God.
